Roots Leadership Academy Clovis Expansion

Roots Leadership Academy Clovis Expansion

The Roots Leadership Academy (Clovis) is a new out-of-school program that brings the creativity, leadership development, and digital learning of NMBLC’s Roots Summer Leadership Academy to rural New Mexico. Designed for youth ages 8 to 16, this one-week academy provides students in Clovis’ BIPOC communities with opportunities to explore identity, build confidence, and develop digital skills in a supportive and culturally responsive environment.

Clovis faces several challenges that affect youth development, including limited enrichment programming, low caregiver engagement, and fewer opportunities for students to build digital skills or express themselves creatively. This pilot program responds to those gaps by combining social emotional learning, media literacy, and the four C’s of 21st-century learning: Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Critical Thinking. Together, these elements help young people strengthen their sense of self and develop healthier ways to navigate challenges in school and community life.

Throughout the week, students participate in hands-on workshops that include digital storytelling, guided journaling, leadership activities, and collaborative dialogue. Youth learn to use tablets, cameras, apps, and editing tools to create their own “Hero’s Journey” films. These creative projects allow students to explore their personal stories, goals, and leadership potential.

The academy culminates in a community Harambee celebration, where students showcase their films and share their experiences with caregivers, partners, and community members. This celebration highlights student voice and builds pride within families and the broader Clovis community.

The program also integrates social emotional learning practices, identity exploration activities, and tools that help students develop empathy, resilience, and positive communication skills. At the same time, youth are introduced to digital citizenship and creative media production, opening pathways to future opportunities in technology and digital careers.

Caregivers are engaged through orientation sessions, surveys, and opportunities to attend the final showcase, reinforcing the belief that families play a critical role in supporting their children’s education and growth. Community partners, including schools, nonprofits, and faith organizations, also help strengthen the local network that supports youth development.

By the end of the academy, students leave with stronger self-confidence, new digital skills, and a creative project that reflects their growth. The Clovis expansion plants the seed for long-term programming in rural New Mexico and lays the groundwork for a full Roots Leadership Academy model in the future. Ultimately, the program aims to build resilience, create new opportunities for BIPOC youth, and foster a culture of belonging and leadership across the Clovis community.
