In 1960, Joseph Shabalala—a Black boy from South Africa—formed Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Against all odds, his group became an international phenomenon, singing a traditional music style called isicathamiya (Is-Cot-A-Mee-Ya), which developed in the mines of South Africa.
