Vote in the New Mexico Local Election: The NMBLC 2023 Voter Guide
Prepare to cast your vote in the 2023 New Mexico regular local election with the NMBLC voter guide.
The New Mexico Regular Local Election is coming up Tuesday, November 7, 2023, so NMBLC has put together a voter guide. Items you may find on your ballot include city councilor, school board, and general obligation bonds that fund important services in your neighborhood.
Below, you’ll find information on same day voter registration, early voting, poll locations, getting your sample ballot, election deadlines, and where to find info on the candidates.
Not Registered to Vote? Do Same Day Registration
If you haven’t yet registered to vote, you can still vote in the general election with same day registration (SDR).
For same day registration, you have to register in person at the same time you vote.
To register to vote, you’ll need
(1) a New Mexico driver’s license or New Mexico identification card issued through the motor vehicle division of the taxation and revenue department
AND
(2) any document that contains an address in the county together with a photo identification
card OR a current valid student photo identification card from a post-secondary educational institution in New Mexico accompanied by a current student fee statement that contains the student’s address in the county.

Mail-in Ballot Voting
All absentee ballots may be returned to the County Clerk’s Office or any Election Day polling location no later than 7:00 PM November 7th – Election Day.
If you are mailing your absentee ballot, mail it no later than October 31, 2023 to make sure it gets to the county clerk’s office on time. After that date, drop off your absentee ballot at any polling location. To find your polling location, click the link below. District 6 City Council Race
NMBLC headquarters are located in the International District of Albuquerque, District 6. NMBLC hosted a District 6 City Councilor forum on October 12, 2023. Watch the District 6 City Councilor forum on NMBLC’s YouTube channel.
Note: After this forum was held, the Albuquerque Journal published an article regarding one of the candidates, Abel Otero. The article reported that Otero’s campaign story about his former incarceration was based on a falsehood.
Since the publication of that article, Mr. Otero has publicly stated he is no longer actively campaigning for city council.

Albuquerque City Council district seats 2, 4, 6, and 8 are up for grabs, as well as school board and other elected positions. There will also be local bond measures to vote on.

Register to Vote: The NMBLC 2022 New Mexico Voter Registration Guide
Prepare to cast your vote in the 2022 New Mexico general election with the NMBLC voter registration guide.
The New Mexico general election is coming up November 8, 2022. If you haven’t yet handled your voter registration, now’s the time.
In the November 2022 election, New Mexicans will elect the next governor of the state.
A debate between gubernatorial candidates Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and weather anchor Mark Ronchetti aired on KOB. You can watch it here. A second debate will air October 12 on KOAT and KKOB.
The race for the next attorney general and Bernalillo County sheriff is on the ballot as well. All 70 state House seats are up for election this year.
The New Mexico Black Voters Collaborative has spearheaded a coalition of organizations dedicated to getting youth and people of color to the polls for this election. With the rise of hate crimes, misinformation about elections, and the recent impact to reproductive health access, voting remains as important as ever.
Below, you’ll find information on registering to vote, requesting an absentee ballot, getting your sample ballot, and election deadlines.
Register to Vote
You can register to vote by mail or online. You have until October 11, 2022 to register to vote this way.

The New Mexico Black Leadership Council (NMBLC) has voter registration agents on site at the office. Call the NMBLC office to talk to an agent about registering to vote: (505) 407-6784.
If you miss the online or mail-in voter registration deadline, you can still use the same day voter registration option. For same day registration (SDR), you have to register in person at the same time you vote. SDR will be available at voting locations throughout early voting and on voting day.
Mail-in Ballot Voting
The last day to request an absentee ballot is November 3, 2022. With an absentee ballot you can mail in your ballot instead of going to the polls in person. To make sure you have plenty of time to fill out and return your absentee ballot, request it now. Absentee ballots will start getting mailed out on October 11, 2022.

In-Person Early Voting

New Mexico Primary Election 2022: NMBLC’s Voting Guide
Prepare to cast your vote in the 2022 New Mexico primary election with the NMBLC voting resource guide.
The New Mexico primary election is coming up. Election day is June 7, 2022. Below, you will find information on same day voter registration, where to find your polling location, how to download a sample ballot, and links to candidate bios and interviews so that you can make an informed voting decision.
How to Register to Vote
During early voting, you can register to vote or update your existing registration and vote on the same day at your County Clerk’s Office. If you wait until Election Day (Tuesday, June 7) to vote, you will need to already be registered.

In-Person Early Voting
Early voting locations are open in each county through Saturday, June 4, 2022. Find your early voting location at the link below. Early voting in person for the primary election ends the Saturday before the election, on June 4, 2022.
Those living in areas affected by the wildfires, especially SAN MIGUEL, LOS ALAMOS, or SANDOVAL counties, are encouraged to participate in early voting. More information is on the Secretary of State homepage:

Make sure your absentee ballot is received by the county clerk’s office by 7:00PM on Election Day. Mail your absentee ballot by Wednesday, June 1, 2022, to make sure it gets there on time.
If you’re worried your mail-in ballot won’t get to the county clerk’s office in time, you can bring your completed absentee mail-in ballot to your County Clerk’s office or at any polling location during Early Voting or on Election Day.
