THE CHISHOLM TABLE IS AN AFFILIATE OF THE NEW MEXICO BLACK LEADERSHIP COUNCIL AS PART OF THE NMBLC’S ADVOCACY AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE. THROUGH THIS INITIATIVE WE CONVENE LEADERS OF BLACK ORGANIZATIONS TO CHANGE OUR COMMUNITY FROM THE INSIDE OUT.
Convened by the New Mexico Black Leadership Council, Chisholm Table is a coalition of nonprofit, governmental, and Black-led organizations prioritizing service to Black communities throughout the state.
Participants apply proven strategies for developing long-lasting organizations with solid communications networks and lend their expertise to shaping those approaches in a way that is targeted and effective for Black New Mexico Residents.
Through the Chisholm Table collaboration, participating organizations accomplish their unique missions and create a collective force that centers political, social, economic, and cultural needs of Black communities.
We are named for Shirley Chisholm, a woman of many firsts: the first African American congresswoman and first African American to run for president, among many others. Mrs. Chisholm said, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”
In addition to bringing our own chairs, we are building a new table. The Black community has been invisible in the state of New Mexico for far too long. Help us build visibility in our state so that we can capture a full picture of the people and organizations that are doing the work to change our community from the inside out.
“You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas. If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”
