Afrofuturism Lecture Series: Unbought and Unbossed: Janelle Monae’s Productive Performances at the Intersections of Black Political Consciousness, Black Materiality, and Afro-Futurism

This talk examines Janelle Monáe’s ‘Emotion Picture’ Dirty Computer (2018) with an eye towards situating her cultural and political significance as an artist, activist, and performer enacting Aspirational Futures in the Black Diaspora.

Andrea L. Mays holds a PhD in American Studies focusing on 20th and 21st Century African American Culture and Politics, Visual Culture, and Gender Studies. She also has a M.A. in Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies, and a B.A. in Communications from George Mason University. Dr. Mays is a Mellon Fellow, UNM Provost’s Race and Social Justice Teaching Fellow, and an Award-Winning Lecturer in UNM’s Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program, and UNM’s Department of American Studies. She teaches courses in Feminist Studies, Film, Literature, and  Race, Class, and Gender Studies.
