Weaving Meanings: Telephone Wire Art from South Africa Exhibit Opening
View the spectacular, colorful art made in South Africa from telephone wire! Join the Folk Art Museum for an immersive opening and celebration. FREE admission all day!
Opening celebration schedule:
1:00 – 1:30 pm Musical performance by Dr. Thokozani Mhlambi, South African composer and cellist from the coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal.
1:30 – 3:00 pm Opening remarks by Charlie Lockwood, MOIFA’s executive director, and collector David Arment, followed by curatorial roundtable with Dr. Elizabeth Perrill and Muziwandile Gigaba, community curator and lead Indigenous knowledge expert.
3:30 – 4:00 pm Encore performance by Dr. Thokozani Mhlambi.
Delight in refreshments from Jambo Cafe and hosted by the Women’s Board of the Museum of New Mexico.

“It’s Basic” Screening: Guaranteed Income Works National Tour
Learn about basic income (also called guaranteed income) with this film directed by Emmy award-winning director Marc Levin. This new documentary introduces viewers to guaranteed income pilot programs led by Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, and their participants.
Immediately following, there will be a panel discussion about the movement to fight poverty in Albuquerque with guaranteed income initiatives, featuring community leaders and guaranteed income recipients.

All ages are invited to make a mini parade float to present during the DJ party with Mario Ybarra Jr. afterward.

Shake off the week with a Día de los Muertos celebration featuring Mario Ybarra Jr., an acclaimed Los Angeles-based artist and culture worker. Dance to old-school R&B records and enjoy local food trucks, music, community art making, and more!
5-8 pm: CONVERSATION & FILM – Sterlin Harjo & Cannupa Hanska Luger
Award-winning 2024 MacArthur Foundation Fellow Seminole/Muscogee filmmaker Sterlin Harjo (Reservation Dogs) will introduce a screening of his Indigenous artist-focused documentary film, Love and Fury. Then there will be a live audience recording of the Broken Boxes podcast series Long Con, an ongoing conversation between Harjo and artist Cannupa Hanska Luger.
